Gastric Balloon

Gastric balloon, also known as intragastric balloon, is a minimally invasive procedure used for weight management and weight loss in overweight or obese people. During the procedure, a silicone balloon filled with saline is inserted into the stomach via endoscopy and inflated with fluid to take up space in the stomach. The balloon limits the amount of food a person can eat and creates an early feeling of satiety.

The benefits of gastric ballooning include significant weight loss, reduced appetite and improved short-term weight control. The procedure is reversible and the balloon is removed after one year.

It is important to note that the gastric balloon is not a permanent solution for weight loss and still requires sustained effort to maintain the results achieved. The procedure should be performed under the supervision of a specialist and is often part of a wider weight management programme, which includes lifestyle changes, dietary modifications and regular exercise.
